How to build a Rally bike

    1. At your local KTM dealership (450RR part) but a lot cheeper when you by the aftermarket UFO “Phantom” Led light at (another..) off-road bike shop.
Getting it working is a challenge though.. it only operates well with a relay.

  1. Great story I admire what you have done. Why do some of the bikes have longer fairings? You fairing is almost like a bikini fairing.

    1. Hi Ian, thanks for your comment.
My bike has ‘only’ a fairing to protect the rally tower and give some wind protection on long distances. The KTM 690 used for the Dakar rally has two extra fuel tanks at the front (left and right) wich are connected to the fairing, that is why they look (and are) mutch heavier.

  2. Hi! Great build! Love the tight setup on the tower!
Also loved the boxed rally tower with protected wiring inside!

    I have aquestion.
Im building a rally bike on a 2011 KTM690r and will use the original instrument odometer as a spare.
Im looking at the remote you have used on the right hand side.
I see that you have done the same that i want to do.
my question is – How did you wire it?
what switch did tou use. i found 2 OEM at ktm. None of them has ktm 690 as a bike they will fit according to the list.

    OEM 50314068000 ?
    OEM 58214069044 ?

Or is there a third one ive missed…

    Best regards // Mike

    1. Sorry for my late reply Mike. Are you still looking for an answer…? OK, the original EXC remote switch from KTM connects directly to one of the connectors behind the headlight. Trust me it works, your instrument odometer will work as a stopwatch and lap counter as well. Note: adjusting the odometer “0” , “+” and “-” will only work if you stand still. So it is no more than a spare odometer, better use your ICO or IMO.

      Good luck,

      Frank

    1. Hi Ron, the exhaust is from DAMExhaust.com in Belgium (mine is on the website) and I use the open air map. With the Acrapovic mapping I used previous to this one it made to much noise in the air filter area. It runs very good, almost identical to the carburated 690 RR (one of my friends ownes one..) Lots of power (and noise.. 92 dB)

  3. Hey there: Nice work on the fairing – was considering the
Alberto Dottori fairing – good to get some real feedback…

Do you have the mold for the one you fabbed, or want
    to sell a fairing ?

    1. Thanx. And yes I have a mould for the fairing I made myself, but considering the work, even at the Dottori price of EUR 350,- it’s not interesting for me.

  4. Hi there. I’m busy with a similar 690 project, in Cape Town, South Africa. But with much more fuel, for a long distance Rallye Raid here (amageza.com – check it out if you fancy come out here in November! 🙂 I wanted to ask about the frame tab you welded on for the nav support. Did you have any issues from yours in the long term, and anything I should know about before I get it done? It looks like a much better solution than the bolt-on versions. I will be fabricating a tower and fairing with a mix of HDPE and carbon/kevlar. Thanks, Ian

    1. I made the bracket of Steel 52 (or Fe 510) which goes well with the Chromoly (CrMo of CroMo) frame. Please note the steering head of the freame is very heavy steel, so the welding will couse serious temperatures. So much in fact, your frame number will be destroyed.. keep that in mind. Furthermore don’t make one weld from top to bottum (left and right side of the bracket) but several small ones. One long weld could make this important part of the frame weak. Good Luck!

      1. Thanks – I’m much better with a grinder than a welder, so will definitely get a professional to do it. On balance do you think it’s a better idea to go that way than using one of the clamp-on frames? This is a bike I’ll keep for a few years, so I’m happy for it to be a permanent situation. Did you MIG weld it, or was it just standard arc? Thanks, Ian

      1. Hi there,

Do you have a drawing of the tower support bracket? I plan to do the same with my 2012 but have no info how to construct the thing.

        Thanks in advance.

      2. Hi Oden, I have no drawings, only a mould made of m plywood. I used a KTM Rally bracket to support the rally tower and bold it to the steering head. The result is very similor to the original RXV Rally. If you like Zi can sent you Some detailed photo’s.

        Cheers, Frank

  5. Hi there, regarding your last email, i was wondering if you could send me those detailed photos as i am trying to convert my 800gs (bmw) to a rally bike, i already have a few ideas on the fairing (the old 450 Rallye fairing which i will make to fit) so this tower should fit in perfectly i think, with a few adjustments that is.

    Great bike btw
